Great Upgrade Option
One of the best ways to improve the performance of your PC is to increase the RAM this can be done by increasing the amount or by buying better performing modules.

I have come across this great price (amazingly from PC World who I normally would never go near) 4GB £33.65

RAM

If you are not sure if your PC is compatible try this link which will scan your computer and tell you what memory is compatible with your PC

ORCA

If you are still not sure PM me with the results of the ORCA scan and I will tell you.

RE: Great Upgrade Option
Please note that windows XP has issues addressing more than 2Gb of RAM so if your machine is capable of running 4Gb or more then you may have to looking at Vista-ing your PC!

RE: Great Upgrade Option
I thought the XP problem was when trying to access more than 3Gb.

RE: Great Upgrade Option
The other option is to put the 2 sticks in different machines as 1 stick of 2 will out perform 2 sticks of 1

I have read many differing reports on what XP will or won't support. Forgot to mention 2.5% Quidco aswell

Really? even with dual-channel enabled on the doubles up sticks and typically lower latencies on smaller sticks?

RE: Great Upgrade Option
I run 4 x 1GB PC8500 on my pc and it flies. It gets a bit warm but I just increased one of the fans on my Antec P180 case.

Good Price for the Ram though. Almost £85 on microdirect

RE: Great Upgrade Option
I am not a hardware guy but the ones I work with and the gamers that are on the software side, all recommend the higher spec Ram but that could be due to the higher performance of this type of Ram as opposed to what most people would have installed as standard on their machines.

Also I believe the type of graphic card you have installed will effect the performance.

To be honest tho the majority of people here are not going to notice the performance difference between a 2x1 or 1x2 config. Unless they are using video editing software or playing the latest games.

I have asked a few other people here and have had even more opinions these being for XP and 32 bit OS in general with dual channel you should have a 1x1 pair and a 512x512 pair or in 32 bit Vista go for 2x2 and activate PAE Switch wich means you can allocate 3 Gb to the OS and 1Gb to the Kernel. (Which I am going to have to look into as it is the first I have heard of it).
