RE: Which Laptop?
Angry Dan, the Aspire 8920G looks interesting. What I want to use it for (mostly) is to play BluRay movies which are in a AVCHD folder or mkv file via an HDMI cable to my large screen HDTV. Apart from being able to do that, whichever laptop I decide upon, (reco's still needed) how do I connect the laptop to my amp for the 6CH surround sound? The connections (out) on these things make no sense to me!

RE: Which Laptop?
Has to be an Appple. Perfect for most things in life and the OS is soooo much more stable than Windows.

(22-09-2008 12:37 PM)vidiotic. Wrote: Has to be an Appple. Perfect for most things in life and the It's a lovely idea... But... My camera RAW software won't run on an Apple, so I would need to pay Adobe many £100s) My TomTom GPS software won't run on Apple There's very little open source software for Apple. On Windows (or Linux) you can have Thunderbird, OpenOffice, The Gimp... Third party sofware choices are much more limited than for Windows in general... So it's not for me... As long as you're 100% sure all your hardware and applications will work, it is definitely worth considering Linux or Apple though! (22-09-2008 12:37 PM)vidiotic. Wrote: OS is soooo much more stable than Windows. Definitely true in the past... BUT My home PC runs XP and runs as a server as well as with 2 desktop sessions, and generally only needs restarted once every month or so. Even that is usually because the Virus Scanner needs a restart to install the latest engine (there are plenty of Mac viruses now - maybe the scanners don't need a reboot though, I don't know). My work laptop gets really beaten up running beta code of all sorts, and getting hibernated twice a day. Usually gets rebooted every 4-6 weeks. I'm not using Apples so I don't know what they are like, but personally I find that I never reboot my PC because of XP instability, so I consider it to be to all intents and purposes "stable". Similarly people still talk about windows smartphones being unstable. My new one is now 4 months old and hasn't been rebooted in that time. My mate is on his 3rd iPhone (two had hardware problems) and he finds that if he doesn't turn it off and on (reboot) once a day it starts getting flaky.... Other people may have completely different experiences, but I find that XP and Windows Mobile 6 form a very stable platform for me! Ian |

RE: Which Laptop?
There is a HDMI connection on the side so you plug it straight into a HDMI port on your TV or Amp. It also states that it has SPDIF line out support in which case you should be covered.
You should have a SPDIF output on your TV (optical fibre PORT) and I would imagine a SPDIF input on your amp. In which case this would be your best option. |

RE: Which Laptop?
Thanks' Angry Dan. Still don't know which to go for. It really is a confusing thing to go shopping for. Especially if after buying it I find it won't do what I got it for.
Makes me nervous as you can't rely on advice of shop staff necessarily! If you aren't living on the edge you are taking up too much space! |

RE: Which Laptop?
I know what you mean there, I always ask questions I allready know the answer to which they should know the answer to, just to check if they know what they are talking about and half the time they do not.
The 8920G is a really nice laptop but it is big! This may or may not be a good thing depending on what use it will normally have. It has a really fancy Ipod style touch pad on the left hand side for music/film control. The reason I looked it up earlier is one of the blokes I work with is buying the 6920G for his wife and he is a proper geek! I am sure there are other similarly spec'd machines but I have had an Aspire for 2 years and have had no problems so am happy to recommend them. Where as I know a few people who have gone for Sony Vaio and have had all sorts of trouble with the displays. |

RE: Which Laptop?
Thanks' for the replies but still confused as to whether and how it can play the sort of HD movies in the sort of file formats they will be in and how I get the 6ch surround sound out to my amp.
The picture to TV I get as it will be a straight forward HDMI cable to the TV. But the 6ch sound is confusing the life out of me! Oh well off to the shops to interrogate some staff! If you aren't living on the edge you are taking up too much space! |

RE: Which Laptop?
How do you have your TV connected to your amp now? The sound will also reach your TV by default through the HDMI cable. It also depends what amp you have as if it is possible you can connect your Laptop to your amp and the amp to your TV (this is how my mate runs his system).
Do you know the model numbers of your TV/AMP if so PM them me and I will have a look into the best way for you to set it up. |
