RE: Which Laptop?
TV:.....Sony Bravia KDL-40W2000 (HDMI x2)
Amp:....Arcam AVR200 I don't have the TV connected to the amp on account I'm a numb nut and don't know how! I have the DVD player connected to the TV via HDMI and the DVD player is connected seperately to the amp via an optical cable (I think)! If you aren't living on the edge you are taking up too much space! |

RE: Which Laptop?
I am just downloading the user manual for your TV (work bandwidth is really low so taking ages), but I would expect you have a digital output on your TV which can be plugged into your AMP in the "Digital In" "Aux" portusing a fibre optic cable which would then run all sound through your AMP. So by connecting your Laptop to your TV via HDMI the TV will then send sound through your AMP.
I have just got your TV manual downloaded and it looks like you do not have a digital output for sound on your TV (which is quite shocking for a TV with HDMI inputs in my opinion), so you need to be able to connect the laptop to the Amp for sound. To get the best quality you will want a laptop with a SPDIF audio output. |

RE: Which Laptop?
So do I connect the laptop to the TV with HDMI and then the laptop to the amp via SPDIF (whatever that is! lol)

RE: Which Laptop?
Yes that is right you then set the audio output on the Laptop to SPDIF.
SPDIF Cable Sounds a lot more complicated then it is. |

RE: Which Laptop?
Ok mate thanks' very much indeed for your help. Very much appreciated.
All I need to do now is check that my amp has SPDIF connector and I'm away! Actually looking now at the specs' for the ACER AS8920G I don't see a mention of SPDIF outlets. If you aren't living on the edge you are taking up too much space! |

RE: Which Laptop?
Decided not to go the laptop route in the end and purchased a media player instead. Bought a DVico Tvix 6500A instead. Fantastic bit of kit.
This thing will play almost every type of movie and music file imaginable, which is what I wanted the laptop for in the first place. http://www.tvix.co.kr/Eng/products/HDM6500A.aspx If you aren't living on the edge you are taking up too much space! |
