Why do you dive?
Why do you participate in high-risk sport?
What do you experience before, during and after participation? What is it that makes some run from risk whilst others actively seek it? These are fascinating questions I hope you'll agree. I am a PhD research student examining these very questions and I would like to know about YOUR EXPERIENCES as a participant of a high-risk sport. Win up to £70 easily... YOU MAY WIN £20 SIMPLY BY FILLING OUT AN ONLINE QUESTIONNAIRE YOU MAY WIN AN ADDITIONAL £50 BY REFERRING OTHER HIGH-RISK SPORT PARTICIPANTS TO COMPLETE THE QUESTIONNAIRE ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ To find out more details and to share your experiences by completing the ONLINE QUESTIONNAIRE please visit: http://www.highrisk.slowprogress.co.uk ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ NOTE: You may remain 100% anonymous by entering any six digit number in the “Name” field. RE: Why do you dive?
I blame it all on that Cousteau chappie. I'm still looking for the sights he saw. As to danger, is it more dangerous than racing, skydiving? I actually don't consider diving to be dangerous, I've never got into a situation that I have been unable to think a safe escape route and executed it safely. My parents seem to think it dangerous.
Part of the excitement for me is to know that there is only one other diver in my office and several who would like to be divers. God bless George Bush and America. Hydroponics at the One Stop Grow Shop http://www.onestopgrowshop.co.uk/Scripts/default.asp |

RE: Why do you dive?
With the missus being an instructor it's the only way I would get to see her. Ha ha ha
Seriously though I never looked at it as a dangerous sport. I was always fasinated by the underwater images I had seen on the box and in magazines. One day I was in the IOW and a dive shop came to the camp site and let people use the scuba gear in the swimming pool. It kind of got me thinking. Then the next year I did a try dive. It was amazing to be so tranquil and at ease with the things around me. The next year I did my OW. and it was the things I saw that drew me into it really, but at that time I was like most, looking for the big things to amaze me. I then went to Malta (yet anaother year later) and did a weeks diving. (where I met the missus, she was the divemaster one day for us) and still I was looking for the big stuff. Then I went to Egypt and again looking for big stuff but from there I went straight out to zeeland in south Holland and spent a week diving with the missus (she's Dutch you see) and she show me the small stuff. And those were the most amazing things I have ever seen. She is fasinated by it all. Showing me the parasites living (and killing) thier hosts. The small nudribranks and tiniest spider crabs that I would never have seen before. Freeing lobsters from fishing nets. watching a hermit crab peer out of it's shell to see if you are still there. Watching a clam tring to swim away (I have video footage if anyone wants to see it. Very funny). Going back to the same wreck a few months time and seeing the same fish hiding in the same place. Is any of this sinking in. At no point did I ever think. "This is a dangerous sport, I'll ave some of that" The only thing that ever goes through my mind is maybe "This is amazing, but I had better do it right or there may be trouble" I used to compete in off-road events with a highly modified Landrover. That was hardwork and if done wrong could be very dangerous, but only if, like diving, you push the boundries beyond reason. I now dive when ever I can. In a few weeks Jelena is comming over here and we will go to Stoney and to the new one in Kent to look for beasties. Then a few weeks after that we are going to Papenburgh in Germany to look for more beasties. Hopefully there we will see if the large pike is still where it normally is and if the carp with the broken tail managed to survive. It's another world, no more or less dangerous than the one we live and breath in everyday! My God I can waffle Good things come to those who believe in the power of their dreams! |
