Web site for Fish ID
I found this web site yesterday, whilst trying to ID the fish in some of my photos:
http://www.fishbase.org The Interface isn't fantastic, but the information held within is. If you select Identification under Tools, you can drill down to the fish Class, Order and Familly, then filter further by major region and country, you're then left with the photos of the species that matched your criteria. Far easier then trawling through a whole heap of books, I even managed to get a positive ID on a couple of blennies and gobies. Bloody marvelous! |

RE: Web site for Fish ID
Seems like a cool site, once you get to grips with that interface!

RE: Web site for Fish ID
Thanks for that Bottlefish, I am really ignorant when it comes to fish. I used to wonder why pictures of plaice had their eyes on the same side, used to think it was for kids. Then someone told me it was because of the way they fed.
Me trying to fins fish at the supermarket is right carry on!I will spend some time on this before the weekend. thanks (14-11-2008 01:07 PM)bottlefish Wrote: I found this web site yesterday, whilst trying to ID the fish in some of my photos: |

Thread hijack warning. Did you know though that plaice start life with their eyes conventionally placed ie one each side and one eye migrates to the other side? Is that what Bones meant when she said I'd got a 'Wandering eye when there is totty about'?

RE: Web site for Fish ID
I get two wondering eyes when I'm out shopping with the wife, normally followed by a slap.
![]() Is that correct about the eye moving thing? or are you pulling my leg? If I was a Pleuronectes platessa I would break from the mould and look normal!
