RE: Weight
I would quite happily have moved his tank off my gear without any concerns for this kit. Then kicked off about them pushing in.

They were annoying one in particular decided he was going to sit on the equipment crates but there was not enough space so he was perched on the edge and his side slung tank was all over my kit and resting on the hoses. So I moved my kit out of the way. Then when the bus came down I picked up Ellie's kit and put it on the bus, all the rebreather people then just piled all there kit on and filled it up so I sat waiting for the next bus.

What made it worse was there were more psople that had been waiting longer than them that did not make the bus I got on.

RE: Weight
Well that would be my normal first reaction however, I was happy to be diving and was trying not to show my true colours and alienate my new dive buddy.

On reflection however your response would have been better.

"what's the dive plan?" "Errrrrr...jump in, swim round and get out?"

I agree, I used just the suit for the first 6 dives. Then dive after dive used the BCD more and more now there is no chance that I would go back to just suit.

(20-11-2008 02:56 PM)Angry Dan Wrote:  I have another question about weight.

On my recent trip to NDAC with EllieCee (whom I would like to thank for putting up with a novice and I would also like to thank RachyBaby for the coffee),we managed 2 dives.

On the first dive we both initially struggled to get below the surface. I was using a harness with 4Kg of lead shot in each side, 2 integrated weight pouches in BCD with 2Kg in each. On the safety stop I was unable to hold position.

For the second dive I added 2 1Kg shot pouches one in each of the trim sections either side of my tank. This made getting down no problem but once we had descended I could not inflate dry suit sufficently to clear the bottom. I then dumped one of the 2Kg pouches and was able to continue the dive. I was then able complete the safety stop (with a bit of confusion) although I did have to hold on to the reference line for a short period.

My question is would it be better to dive with the extra weight at the begining and add air into BCD to compensate which I can then release prior to ascent?

If not has anyone got any tips I can practice for overcoming this issue.

Glad you had a good dive Dan.............problems with my e-mail and couldn't make plans with EllieCee.
Away this weekend but if your up for more practice let me know n we can meet up somewhere.

RE: Weight
lol it would have been funny watching you throw £5000 worth of rebreather over the side! I'd have been more worried about you getting kicked out and banned on your first visit. We'd have to go to Vobster instead then Lol

Seriously though, they were rude arrogant people. I've never seen it like that at NDAC before. Maybe, a symptom of Yellow Box Of Death ownership is delusions of elitism?

RE: Weight
Maybe not throw their gear over the side, just a small slit in one of their many hoses. Ellie you should have given them a slap!

RE: Weight
Dan I have a similar problem and I have found diving with the extra weight to make the initial descent easier just makes the rest of the dive harder. I swim more upright kick up sediment and use more gas and find the frog kick hard. If I descend slowly sometimes with the help of my buddy/singing or a shot line then once under then the rest of the dive is no problem even at very shallow depths. So Im trying to sort out the original problem of the breathing in when first descending rather than adding the extra weight.

RE: Weight
Well I am glad it is not just me.

Do you not have a problem holding a safety stop at the end?

RE: Weight
I have had this problem in the past of not being able to descend. My initial reaction to cold water is to gasp, "Shit that's cold!" and take in a big breath. I found if I just bobbed on the surface for a minute to get used to the cold it was much easier to relax my breathing and then descend. Worth a try.
