Can't decide!
Maldivian Air Taxi 20kg including hand luggage (yes they weigh the lot) no diving allowance & $4.50/kg excess. Useless website! http://www.mataxi.com/
Maldivian Air Taxi: "Used them 3 times (6 flights in all), always well well over 20kg (usually well over 30kg), never been charged a $ extra."

Air 2000, 20kg +10kg dive gear free - on outward journey, charges 50 euros on return - then refunds said euros after a heated email exchange. Air2000 is now First Choice, see #11 above.

Bangkok Airlines 20Kg + 5kg cabin, no additional allowance. "BUT on both occasions they ignored the excess weight (21kg in total for the pair of us) so we were able to fly without paying any excess baggage fees."

General Advice

Airlines have a habit of changing the rules at the drop of a hat. ALWAYS check the latest situation via phone or website. ALWAYS take a printed copy of the website with you, cos the check-in staff WILL deny all knowledge of the extra allowance. If you have to pre-book the allowance by phone, ALWAYS ask for confirmation in writing, and get a contact name & telephone number in case of problems. ALWAYS have your C-cards to hand at check-in. Some tour operators will have negotiated a special deal for divers with the airline, so you should check with them. As usual, ALWAYS get details in writing. Be aware that connecting flights may be with different operators, and that different rules may apply.

Monarch small print: Possible free dive gear allowance

Naturally on phoning them you it turns out to be a whopping 5 kilos - but you never know......


** On certain Monarch Charter Flights (MON flight number prefix) to Egypt and the Maldives only, a free dive equipment allowance may be applicable. This is upon production of a valid Dive Licence/Certificate (PADI or BSAC), passengers carrying dive equipment such as scuba tanks, weight belts, respirators, and buoyancy control jackets are to be allowed an additional 5kgs baggage allowance free of charge. Any passengers who cannot produce a valid dive certificate should pay for dive equipment at the standard per sector rates, as set out above. The free dive equipment allowance may not be combined with the per sector charge. Any equipment carried over and above the per sector weight of 13kgs per passenger/per dive bag will be charged for at our standard published per kg excess rates. If tanks are carried please ensure that these are emptied and the cylinder valve is loose.

Ryan Air....."Sports Equipment" is £30 each way now, I booked it the other day as there was no mention about scuba gear, so didn't want to take the chance also normal luggage is £20 for 15KG and their rigid on this add an extra bag to the first and its £60 for the second one.....daylight robbery that is! 10Kg hand luggage is free but watch the dimensions, they have them listed on their website!

Thomas Cook update (neither of links in top ooist now work)

Their Web site now states -
For all flight only bookings, booked from the 4th March 2009, no free allowance will be provided for checked in baggage (check-in baggage). Passengers will still receive 5kg of hand baggage free on all flights. Any passengers wishing to check-in baggage, up to 20kg, can do so for a small fee as shown in the table below

Extra allowance does exist for Golfers, Canoeists, Hanggliders, Paracenders etc. ... for a modest round trip price (£20 to £40) irrespective of weight.
For a fixed 10Kg extra Divers have to pay £30 for round trip.
So Thomas Cook seems less friendly to divers now.

Coming back from Egypt, Hurghada airport on 18/09/09 at the check-in desk. On seeing a queue of approx. 15 divers with their luggage, an extra supervisor appeared with his surcharge duplicate book. The flight was with Thomson airlines, allowance 20kg plus 5kg for divers card. Hand luggage 5kg. He requested that you put your hand luggage on top of your other dive bag and took the total weight, billing you for the excess over 30kg. Caught out the first two divers before a couple of us hastily arranged our hand luggage bag and what we carried on our person

Qatar Airways no longer provide any additional allowance for dive gear and treat anything over the allotted weight as Excess.

I've just booked with Air Malta for October, they no longer do free sports gear. It's 20 Euro each way if you prebook it http://airmalta.com/page_x.aspx?l=1&p=1672

I'm also booked with BA to Turkey next year for my wedding (when BFitWWW becomes BWitWWW - hopefully!). We're flying Euro club or something and it is the most generous allowance I've known - two bags each up to 32kg a piece http://www.britishairways.com/travel/bagchk/public/en_gb?topic=freebags but no free sports gear allowance.

I flew to Marsa in April and am going again next week with Thomson and the allowances are the same now as then.

Copied from the booking confirmation letter:
"The baggage allowance for your Thomson flight is 25kg for the hold and 5kg hand. Your flight coupons only show 20kg for the hold and the additional 5kg is provided by the airline on production of your Scuba Diving Cert cards. Please be aware though that no bag now can be over 23kg so you will have to split your bags."

Some airlines, notably Emirates, allow 30Kg checked luggage for economy passengers even though they have no special 'Sports equipment' allowance. That is usually enough for my Dive kit and personal luggage. We are going to Philippines in January with Emirates.

With some other airlines eg KLM or the Malaysian airline, you can negotiate at the time of booking the ticket and "register" your dive kit. This allows either additional free allowance or a fixed fee of (usually) under £50 pp for the whole trip.

Easyjet allows extra dive luggage, increasing the total weight (1 piece normal luggage + 1 piece dive luggage) to 32kg. Hand luggage is unlimited though as long as it fits!

Forgot how much it costs though...

I just found out that Malaysia Airways allow 10Kg of free baggage to bone fide card-carrying divers over and above their 20Kg limit - it is mentioned in a rather obscure corner of their webite. That, combined with their competitive rates and the existence of an Airside Transit Hotel at KL airport makes this a very useful mode of travel for Far Eastern & Oceanic destinations. For example, for the Phuket trip this November, I am flying from Heathrow to KL, spending overnight in the Transit Hotel and after good night sleep and feeling refreshed, catching the next morning's flight to Phuket. Going via Bangkok is inconvenient because the Thai airline allows only 23Kg and has no overnight transit facilities while Singapore Airlines do not allow more than 20Kg for economy passengers. In fact I have rung their offices and they were adamant that 20kg is the free limit. Pity, because they have a superb airport and transit hotel.

SriLankan airways are allowing 30 kgs of luggage for our trip to the Maldives.

I thought I would ask: has anyone ever had issues with regs or wing/backplate in a carry on bag? (ie going through security) I will of course put the knife in the bag that will be checked in, and I won't be travelling with the canister light.

I carry regs, BP, primary light and back-ups as hamd luggage on Air Malta, Easyjet, BA and Virgin, never had a problem. Been pulled at security a couple of times but after I explained what they were and (at LHW) demonstrated the use of a primary light and recommended a local BSAC club they were fine.

On one trip one of the other guys (HP) had a similar kit in a wheelie bag and got pulled and that gate, they weighed it and made him check it in but didn't charge any extra (Air Malta)
