i did a week in egypt in 2010,liverboard,3/4 dives a day, water never below 28,sometimes as high as 32,good diving but tooooooooo hot,i possibly dident lose weight though because of the beer and food again :)

also, ive gotta say, although im going back this year,i enjoy diving over here a lot more, more exciting when you don't know what you gonna hit until you have hit it:time bomb:

OJ - I have Type 1 diabetes and dive as well. Like you I struggled with my GP due to the contra-indications on most "I am healthy to dive" training forms. In fact, my GP wouldn't sign and I had to see a specialist HSE diving doctor.

Don't know what management regime you follow but for me its the Basal-Bolus and works for me. I tend to keep my bloodsugar at the higher end of the scale prior to a dive and ensure that I have eaten slow relase carbohydrates (porridge for instance), then I tend to have a boost just before entering the water, and manage hour long 40m+ dives with twin-sets, stages etc., without dropping below 5.

I do carry hypostop (think its renamed to glucogel now) in my toolbox on the boat and make buddies aware but don't take anything underwater with me. For me one of the keys to diving is the relaxation and this itself promotes better sugar control.

    Gotta be honest Harry,
I've no idea what this chart shows. If I look at the trip to Dahab the blue line (the only one that seems to move) is the same at the start as the end. I'm intrigued enough to ask for an explanation of how you measure your fitness from this.
    Cheers, Dave

I'd agree based on my memory of that dive that we did with you! I was in a shorty and was massively surprised at how cold Crystal Bay was compared to some of the other sites! Sadly I can't pull the stats off my computer to back you up with data because when we got home my computer went off to Suunto (again) for repair because it wouldn't download to my PC and whilst it was being repaired the memory was lost.

    I'm diabetic.

The blue line is my glucose level first thing in the morning.

Inside the yellow band is good.

Close to or below the red line is at risk of hypoglcemia ( not good ). That is the territory that should not be explored by diving diabetics.

Above the yellow band is less good and the further above the yellow and thus the more hyperglycaemic I am the less happy my quack is with me (and the more lethargic I am)

Observe wild fluctuation into high glucose level before the start of the holiday, one trip to moderately high levels in the first week ( warning avoid the Chinese restaurant in future ), followed by a steady march down into yellow territory.

Low point matches my return to UK, results have been below 10 units since my return. Since I plotted that graph, I have I think one result over 10, and the trend is upwards a little, as I loose the fitness that I gained diving regularly on holiday.

    Clearer ??

And if you ignore the low peak over Christmas, (over indulgence and then food poisoning) it averages quite well below 10

Thanks all for the tips and links to glucose gels. I ended up picking up some Lucozade gels, which hopefully I won't need anyway! I am on basal and bolus as well (Novorapid and Levemir). I'm just going to be extra careful on my dive days, and take slow release carbs. Will load up a bit on fast acting carbs just before diving to be extra safe. I probably won't go very deep on this trip as its my first time as a certified diver.

Anyway I'm already in Thailand and looking forward to the diving!
