PeterT Holyhead Diving Festival 31st August & 1st September 2002 Newry Beach, Holyhead, Anglesey. This years festival co-organised between the Holyhead Maritime Museum and Anglesey Divers aims to promote scuba diving and sea safety and will be opened by the actor Mark Wingett (Jim Carver, The Bill) at 11 am on Saturday morning. Mark is planning to be around for the two days of the festival. Anglesey Divers are providing try dives and snorkelling sessions for members of the public. Meanwhile for qualified divers we have a photo competition organised by the Northern Underwater Photographic Group (contact Lucy Kay on 01248 681361 for further details and an entry form) and Scubapro U.K.(Ltd) will have a stand at the festival, continuing their on going programme to support diving in the U.K, with the complete range of Scubapro and Uwatec products on show. This will be a great opportunity for divers and snorkellers to try equipment before they buy and receive expert advice on site. We have a strong conservation theme this year with stand space being taken by the Marine Conservation Society, Countryside Council for Wales and the Shark Trust. These organisations will all have experts on hand to explain the role of their organisations and answer any queries you may have. Anglesey Sea Zoo have lent us a touch tank for the weekend and children will be invited to hunt around the rock pools to gather as many different marine creatures as possible. Everyone entering the critter hunt will be awarded with a certificate and the children who collect the most species will be awarded a prize. The critter hunt will start at 12 noon on both days. Members of the Marine Conservation Society will be there to identify the marine animals in the touch tank. The weekend is also concerned with safety, not just of divers but all water users. The Holyhead Coastguard station will be open and will conduct tours of its operations room as well as having displays of Archaeological artefacts and diving through the ages. The Maritime Coastguard Agency and RNLI display units will be at the festival with safety literature and will be able to answer your queries regarding all sea activities. Holyhead RNLI have their open day on day one of the festival and will be staging a rescue demonstration on Saturday afternoon involving the coastguard, Anglesey Divers and RNLI The doors of the Holyhead Maritime Museum will be open on both days for visitors to have a look around. Refreshments can be purchased in the Museum café. The Historical Diving Society will be at the festival with one of their members dressed in Historical diving equipment (Hard Hat) and will be diving from Newry Beach on both afternoons. So that you can see what goes on above and below the water. We will be filming the Hard Hat diver and try dives with a video camera and a Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV), which you can watch live on TV monitors in the Maritime Museum.
