Originally posted by Frog: You been to Kenya? You jammy git! I'd love to go there. I've dived Egypt (Sharm-el-Sheik) which was fab. The boat crew couldn't understand my body piercing at all. Totally beyond them, although they understood ladies having their noses and ears pierced. Great laugh. What's Kenya like? Do tell.
Kenya was fantastic. I have been to Mombassa twice now and hope to return this November (the best time for divers is between October and April) You can get some cheep deals on flights and accommodation via the net, my other half and I managed to get return flights for £250 each and we paid £18 a day for the pair of us all inclusive. We dived with Baracuda Diving (yes one R they are German) at Tiwi Beach. Mike the owner charged us $20 per dive own kit they supplied tanks and weights. On most dives we were the only divers in the boat, he and the other guides were second to none. We did two dives a day every other day over two weeks. Every dive was exceptional, not as many fish as the Red Sea but lots of turtles to see and the best of all Whale Sharks. The thrill of diving alongside these magnificent beasts can not be put into words (by the likes of me anyway). Dolphins can be seen on almost every other trip but they are very shy and stay well away from divers. At the beginning and end of every dive your kit is carried for you to and from the boat to Baracuda’s dive station at the top of a silver sand beach. On my last trip out there I even got to do my PADI Rescue diver course with Mike, it was hard work and he cut no corners, the best bit was he only charged me for the dives.
Frog Sounds superb Pete. Holidays are sorted for his year now, but maybe I can persuade my boyfriend to go next year. He's been before, but that was with the Army, so slightly different circumstances! How did you find out about it? Net, mates, dive mag? Dive safely.
PeterT I was searching the net about three years ago for some cheap deals to New York, I then stumbled across the fact that I could go to Kenya for two weeks all inclusive for the cost of 4 days in New York. I had no idea what the diving was like, but I did know that the water was clear and warm, I was not disappointed. Last year I got a cheap flight and phoned the hotel in Kenya and booked direct.
PeterT Hi Jos, and welcome to UKDivers.com. You were unfortunate with your diving in Kenya. October to April is the best time to go for the diving, on my trips the viz was about 20 metres, not as good as the Red Sea but there was plenty of life about. My Whale shark encounter made the second trip one I will always remember. The Red Sea is exceptional if you get to the right places. My next trip is end of October; the good news is the exact trip I am booked on is featured in the August issue of Dive Magazine we will be diving from the newly refitted Excel in the Southern Red Sea. If I get to see half the things the writer of the article saw I will be more than happy.
jjoselyn New to Forum. I dived in Kenya with Baracuda in July 2001. Found the coral and visability very dissappointing compared to Caribbean...too much dynamiting for fish has killed a lot of the coral and despite recent measures to conserve some areas, the fish were pretty scarce and the coral dull and uninteresting. Not dived in Red Sea (not yet anyway) so can't compare.
