British Divers Marine Life Rescue
Kevin Having read an interesting article on BDMLR in the September issue of Dive magazine, I am keen to hear whether any one out there has any first hand knowledge or experience of the work they do or may even have joined the organisation. I feel any organisation that seriously attempts to protect our delicate and often-endangered marine ecology is worth supporting (I realise this can't always be financial). As divers, surely we have a responsibility to protect our seas and oceans to ensure that future generations are able to enjoy them as we do. Any thoughts?
gnomad Want to know about BDMLR....well here goes And I quote" BDMLR are a registered charity dedicated to the rescue of marine wildlife..& is operated entirely by volunteers. The rescue teams are trained divers, boat handlers and medics..on call 24 hours a day,365 days a year." ...so much for the blurb. Membership is £25/year, but a better idea is to do the Marine Mammal Medic Course. It's a 1 day course for £55, teaching basic first aid for cetaceans & seals, and refloating etc, and this price includes your 1st years membership. Lets face it....somebody has to look after these wee beasties, so who better than us divers. You only have to have dived with a dolphin, whale or seal once to know..it's time to give something back......go ahead..make the effort http://www.bdmlr.org.uk/pages/main.html Every man dies....not every man lives!
PeterT Kevin, maybe we could start an interested parties list. If we could get enough interested maybe they would run a course in East Anglia. You can put me down for a start, I live 50 metres from the beach I have seen two stranded seal pups this year. The RSPCA collected them. ~~ PeterT ~~ Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat its mistakes. [UNKNOWN]
Kevin Pete. That sounds like a good idea. I'm not sure that too many seals have been stranded in the Stour Valley before, but I would find the day course interesting nevertheless. I will contact BDMLR and see how many they need to run a course and so on and report back. Speak to you soon.
